A calmer way to start the year

Andrea Toole

ADHD COACH & EDUCATOR

Hi Reader,

Happy New Year!
I hope your 2026 is off to a good start.

Every January, I think a lot about the pressure we put on January 1 to mean something.

New goals. New routines.
New, new, new.
A clean slate.

For many people, especially those with ADHD, that pressure makes it harder to begin, not easier.

I view this period as a transition. A moment to rest, reflect, and ease into what comes next, instead of forcing a fresh start on a specific date.

If you’re starting on January 2, January 10, or sometime later this year, that still counts. You don’t need to start your goals, resolutions, or “word of the year” on January 1. Trust your timing.

Creativity flows more freely when the pressure is off. Progress comes more easily when you’re not forcing.

Trusting my timing with my podcast

In a newsletter I sent in mid-September, I shared that after three nudges in one week, I’d decided to relaunch my podcast in the fall.

It relaunched last week.
Not too late. Right on time.

Episode 2 (Season 2) of PRIMED for ADHD is live.

If you missed Episode 1, I shared why I restarted the podcast, what’s changed, and what you can expect this season.

This week’s episode explores the tendency to try to reset everything at once. Again, new routines, new plans. In the episode, I introduce a simple concept I use in my work: anchors.

Anchors are small, repeatable points in the day that help create stability without forcing yourself into strict routines or full overhauls.

If January feels quieter than expected, or harder to get traction in, this episode is a good place to start.

Or look for it on most major podcast platforms

After I recorded and edited it, I sent a good friend (who I know is reading this) the following gif:

We all need to take a moment to recognize our achievements before moving on to the next.
